(Kitco News) – The world’s largest off-grid solar battery hybrid system in mining in the Fekola gold mine in Mali, West Africa, according to a today from Suntrace GmbH and BayWa re.
The energy project aims to save 13.1 million liters of heavy fuel oil annually.
“After the completion of the feasibility study by Suntrace and BayWa re, B2Gold (TSX: BTO) approved the implementation of the hybrid project in July 2019, which is optimally tailored to the requirements of the mining industry,” wrote Suntrace in its press release.
“The Fekola gold mine is in operation around the clock. With the new 30 MW solar system, three of six heavy oil generators can be switched off during the day and the energy production of the remaining three generators can be reduced considerably. The 15.4 MWh battery storage system compensates for fluctuations in energy production and ensures reliable operation, so that during the day up to 75% of the goldmine’s electricity needs can be covered by renewable energies. “
Gold production at Fekola in 2021 is estimated at 530,000 to 560,000 ounces. The total cost of its upkeep is between $ 745 and $ 785 an ounce.
